They’re touted as the natural remedy for erectile dysfunction (ED), but what you may be popping to perform in bed may cause reactions you weren’t expecting.

A recent investigation by the Associated Press revealed that male enhancement pills touted with natural ingredients may actually have more of the drug contained in prescription-only equivalents. And Pfizer, maker of Viagra, reported that it conducted its own study of over 3,000 herbal enhancement supplements and found that nearly 70 per cent of them contained the main ingredient found in Viagra.

The danger of unknown ingredients doesn’t lie in the established and approved lab-tested brands, but in unregulated knock-offs sold over the Internet.

Matthew Pyatt, a naturopathic doctor with Grassroots Naturopathic in Calgary, says there are alternatives to the happy little blue pill, citing there are certain proven amino acids, vitamins and herbs that can be used.

According to Lilly, the once daily Cialis formulation is intended for men who anticipate more frequent sexual activity (i.e. twice weekly), and contains a lower dose than the previously approved version that is taken as needed.
The newly approved formulation, aside from offering perhaps a more convenient and attractive option to men, will also be no more taxing on their wallets. According to Lilly, the wholesale pricing for the once-daily Cialis will be comparable to the as-needed formulation, so that patients who currently use two or more pills of the as-needed version should not have higher treatment costs through using the once-daily product.

Gaining EU approval in June last year, the once-a-day product is currently available only in parts of Europe, but introduction to further countries is expected throughout 2008.

A single jab that could give lifelong protection against all types of flu has produced promising results in human trials.
The vaccine, made by Acambis, should protect against all strains of influenza A - the cause of pandemics. Currently, winter flu jabs have to be regularly redesigned because the flu virus keeps changing.
The new vaccine would overcome this and could be stockpiled in advance of a bird flu outbreak, say experts.

A Chicago woman was sentenced to six months in prison for her role in an international counterfeit pharmaceutical drug network that federal authorities said had planned to distribute $8 million worth of tablets from Houston.Amal Alrub, 28, was arrested in Houston in April after meeting with authorities and arranging to buy about 800,000 loose counterfeit Viagra tablets hidden in cardboard boxes filled with stuffed animals that were shipped from China. Alrub, who is not a United States citizen, also faces the possibility of deportation.

Federal agents learned that a cargo container with the counterfeit drug was en route from China to California, and ultimately, to Houston, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

Alrub was scheduled to pick up 100,000 of the tablets, federal officials said, and arrange for the remainder to be transported to New York.

After arriving in Houston and inspecting the tablets, she gave an undercover agent $30,000 in cash, federal officials said.
